15 More Husky Facts That Will Blow Your Mind (And Explain So Much)

If you devoured our first round of Husky facts (and we know many of you did), buckle up — because the Siberian Husky rabbit hole goes much, much deeper. Here are 15 more things that make this breed utterly one of a kind.

1. They Were Almost Extinct

After the Soviet government closed Siberia's borders in the 1930s, the Chukchi's original Husky bloodlines nearly disappeared entirely. The breed survived largely because dogs had already been exported to Alaska for sled racing.

2. They Literally Change Eye Color as Puppies

Husky puppies are often born with dark eyes that shift to their final color — blue, brown, green, or parti — within the first few months of life. You won't always know what you're getting at birth.

3. They Can "Shut Down" Their Metabolism

During long sled races, Huskies can run for hours without eating and show none of the muscle breakdown seen in human athletes. Scientists believe they can essentially flip a metabolic switch — something no other species has been documented doing to the same degree.

4. Huskies Were Used in WWII

The US Army's Arctic Search and Rescue Unit used Siberian Huskies during World War II to locate downed pilots and deliver supplies in Alaska and Greenland. They were considered military assets.

5. Their Coat Actually Keeps Them Cool in Summer Too

That thick double coat isn't just for cold weather. It also acts as insulation against heat and UV rays in summer. Shaving a Husky actually makes them more susceptible to overheating — not less.

6. They Have a Unique Running Gait

Huskies use a "double suspension gallop" — a gait where all four feet leave the ground twice per stride. It's part of why they're so efficient over long distances.

7. Their Noses Can Change Color

Many Huskies develop a "snow nose" (also called "winter nose") — a pink stripe or patch that appears on their dark nose in colder months and fades back in summer. It's harmless and happens due to reduced enzyme activity in cold temperatures.

8. They Dream… Intensely

Husky owners widely report that their dogs twitch, whimper, howl, and run in their sleep more dramatically than most breeds. Given their active, stimulus-rich lives, it makes sense their brains have a lot to process.

9. Togo Did More Than Balto

The famous 1925 Nome serum run is most associated with Balto, but the dog who actually covered the longest and most dangerous leg of the relay was Togo, led by musher Leonhard Seppala. Togo ran 264 miles — Balto ran the final 55. Togo finally got his own Disney film in 2019.

10. They Have a Strong Homing Instinct — But Will Still Run

Huskies that escape don't necessarily get "lost" — they often cover huge distances and can find their way back. That said, their instinct to run means traffic and distance are still serious risks. Always ID and microchip your Husky.

11. They're Not Great Guard Dogs

Huskies are famously friendly — even with strangers. Their instinct is to greet, not guard. If you're looking for a watchdog, a Husky will probably just show the burglar around.

12. Their Howl Can Carry for Miles

Huskies evolved to communicate across vast, open tundra. Their howl is designed for distance — which is great in Siberia, less great in a suburban neighborhood at 3am.

13. They're Genetically Closer to Wolves Than Most Breeds

DNA studies have confirmed that Siberian Huskies and other ancient breeds like Malamutes and Shiba Inus are among the most genetically similar domestic dogs to wolves — though they're still fully domesticated and no more "wolf-like" in behavior than other dogs.

14. They Bond With the Whole Pack, Not Just One Person

Unlike some breeds that attach strongly to one primary person, Huskies tend to distribute their love across the whole household — human and canine members included. Great for families; slightly humbling if you thought you were their favorite.

15. They Have a Flair for the Dramatic

From refusing to walk, to throwing full tantrums when it's bath time, to the legendary "Husky scream" — this breed has more personality per pound than almost any other dog. They don't just live with you. They perform for you.
